Frequently asked questions
The naming of Bang & Olufsen systems is quite frankly confusing, even to us sometimes! 'BeoSound' is a relatively new name and refers to a self-contained music system which will normally require BeoLab active loudspeakers. Examples are the BeoSound 9000, BeoSound 3000, BeoSound 3200, BeoSound Ouverture and BeoSound 4. There are however examples when BeoSounds are completely integrated units which contain speakers as well - these being the BeoSound Century, BeoSound 1 and BeoSound 3. BeoCenter was the name used for Bang & Olufsen music centres which have since been discontinued. The best known of these which is still seen frequently is the BeoCenter 9500 and its derivatives, These music centres have a built in CD, cassette player and radio as well as a power amplifier. Unfortunately Bang & Olufsen then went and spoilt everything by using the term BeoCenter for other models! The BeoCenter 2500 and 2300 are early versions of the BeoSound 3000 and Ouverture and have no power amplifier. The name has now been resurrected and is used to describe a system supplying both audio and video signals - the example being the Bang & Olufsen BeoCenter 2. This is a DVD player, but will also play CD's and has a radio included. To finally confuse things further, Bang & Olufsen have just introduced an audio only Beocenter 2! If in doubt, please ring us for advice - we are happy to help, and if any staff from the B&O 'product naming department' want to call and explain exactly what's going on, we would love to hear from you!!
Bang & Olufsen N.MUSIC or 'Net Music' is basically music stored on your home computer. Bang & Olufsen make a special box called PC2 (later called BeoPort) that connects your computer to your NMUSIC capable music system. This allows your song library to be controlled using your Bang & Olufsen remote control and piped through your Bang & Olufsen music system. You can select different albums, artists, playlists or even music genres then select which particular song you wish to play. The extended display of the BeoCenter 2 and BeoSound 4 in particular allow this to be done quite easily, and the information about the tracks can be displayed on the system. The device works with both PC and Mac, though Macs use a Non Bang & Olufsen piece of software which limits some of the functions. N.MUSIC is clearly going to be the future of music storage and playback and the next generation of Bang & Olufsen to be released will be based around this technology.
The answer is yes, but with newer systems you will need an extra piece of equipment. This is a black box containing a power amplifier, and comes in various guises. For 'same room' use, you can use an 'MCL2P' or an 'ML/MCL Converter' which both basically feed your non-B&O speakers with an amplified signal. These switched on automatically by the Bang & Olufsen system and can be hidden away as it has no controls on it. It is rated as having an output of 2 x 60W long term output. The last option, for link rooms (such as shower rooms needing ceiling speakers, patios and outdoor applications) is the 'BeoLink Passive'. The BeoLink Passive is basically an ML/MCL Converter supplied with a Link Eye to allow control from a seperate room. If you need further assistance though, please call us and we would be happy to help!
It is a type of radio broadcast which is available on the Bang & Olufsen Beocenter 2 and the Beosound 4. It allows reception of many more stations than available on FM or AM. It is better quality than AM and has the capacity to match FM . However although it is much less prone to noise, broadcasters tend to transmit their programmes at fairly low quality in most cases. Whilst this is fine for talk shows, music suffers. Radio 3 is on the whole an exception to this.
MasterLink is a system that allows you to use the music and video system in your main room throughout your house. This is done using a special Bang & Olufsen wiring system that allows control via either remote receivers in each room or through supplementary TVs or audio systems that are ML equipped. Most modern Bang & Olufsen systems are equipped with this system either as standard or as an option, and MasterLinking can be an ingenious way of enjoying all aspects of your B&O 'collection'. For instance, you could place a BeoSound 9000 in the dining room with a pair of BeoLab 6000 loudspeakers and a BeoLab 3500 Link Room loudspeaker in the bedroom. Once they are linked together, you can listen to CD's in your bedroom that are playing in the lounge on the BeoSound 9000 with full control! Incorporate Bang & Olufsen Televisions into the equation, where you can call up a DVD in your BeoVision 7 to play through your BeoCenter 6 in the bedroom for instance - and you then start to have a 'whole-house' ML solution. It's a fantastic system that works beautifully when set up correctly. Call us for more information and we will be happy to talk you through it!
